Who can register a .co.ke domain?

.co.ke is the Kenyan domain KENIC sets aside for commercial use. Registration is open, so a limited company, a sole trader, a freelancer or someone testing a business idea can all register one.

Pick a name you have a right to use. Registering a well-known brand you do not own invites a dispute, and you can lose the name.

Should you choose .co.ke, .ke or .com?

Pick the extension your customers will type without thinking. For a business that sells mainly in Kenya, that is usually .co.ke. A .ke name is shorter and reads as national rather than commercial. A .com suits a business that sells across borders.

Many businesses register two: the one on their signage and business cards, and a second so a competitor or a domain reseller cannot take it. The spare one simply redirects to the main site.

Extension Best for Price per year
.co.ke Businesses selling mainly in Kenya KES 1,000
.ke A shorter, national name KES 5,000
.com Selling beyond Kenya KES 1,600

How do I register a .co.ke domain?

Have the name, the registrant's details and your M-Pesa phone ready. The steps take a few minutes of your time.

  1. Search for the name

Type the name into the domain search and pick .co.ke. Keep it short, easy to spell over the phone, and free of hyphens if you can.

  2. Add it to your cart

Choose how many years to register for, and add hosting or email if you need them. Everything is priced in KES.

  3. Pay by M-Pesa

Complete checkout in the client area. The domain is registered to the details you enter, so use the business owner's details, not your web designer's.

  4. Point it at your website and email

Use our nameservers if your hosting is with us, or add DNS records for a host elsewhere. DNS changes can take a few hours to show everywhere.

What happens if my .co.ke domain expires?

Renewal falls due on the same date each year. If it lapses, your website and every email address on the domain stop working, because the domain no longer points anywhere.

An expired domain is not released straight away. It goes through the registry's expiry stages first, and during that time the owner can still renew it. If nobody does, the name becomes available to anyone.

The simplest protection is to renew for more than one year and keep the contact email on the domain current, so renewal reminders reach someone who still works for you.

Can I move an existing .co.ke domain to NairoHost?

Yes. A transfer moves the management of the domain to us without changing who owns it, and your website keeps running as long as the DNS settings stay the same.

Ask your current registrar for the transfer authorisation code, sometimes called the EPP code. Check that the registrant email is one you can still read, then start from our transfer page.

Questions

Questions about .co.ke domains

How much is a .co.ke domain in Kenya?
At NairoHost a .co.ke domain costs KES 1,000 for one year, paid in shillings. Check the domain search for the current rate before you pay.
Do I need a company registration certificate for a .co.ke domain?
.co.ke registration is open, so individuals and sole traders register them too. If you are unsure whether your situation needs anything extra, ask our support team before you buy.
Can I register both .co.ke and .com for my business?
Yes. Many businesses use one as the main address and point the other at the same site, which stops anyone else registering the name in the extension you skipped.
Can I use my .co.ke domain for email?
Yes. Once the domain is registered you can create addresses like info@yourbusiness.co.ke with an email hosting plan, or connect the domain to Google Workspace or Microsoft 365.
What happens if I forget to renew my .co.ke domain?
Your website and email stop working when the domain expires. The name is held for a period during which you can still renew it, and after that anyone can register it.
