The situation

What do NGOs & Non-Profits need from a website?

Donors and partners check an organisation's website before they fund it. They look for registration details, the board, audited reports, current programmes and a way to get in touch. An NGO that publishes that information clearly looks accountable, and one without it is easy to pass over when grants are awarded.

Communities are increasingly online too. KNBS figures in the Gross County Product 2025 report show internet use among Kenyans aged three and over rose from 16.6 per cent in 2015/16 to 35.0 per cent in 2023/24. A website lets a programme reach beneficiaries, volunteers and local partners as well as international funders.

We host NGO and community organisation websites with a free SSL certificate on every plan, so donation and contact forms load over HTTPS. Email on your own domain gives staff and programme officers addresses that stay with the organisation, and plans can be paid yearly by M-Pesa in shillings.

Common problems

What usually goes wrong?

Donors cannot find your track record

Funders looking for reports, registration and past results find only a social page, and move on to an organisation that publishes them.

Staff email scattered across free accounts

Programme officers write from personal addresses, so correspondence is lost when they leave and partners doubt who they are dealing with.

Updates reach too few people

Stories from the field and calls for volunteers stay in chat groups instead of reaching supporters who could share or give.

Questions

NGOs & Non-Profits: questions answered

Which domain should a Kenyan NGO use?
A .or.ke domain is intended for non-profit organisations in Kenya and signals that you are locally registered, though KeNIC asks for supporting documents. A .org domain has no eligibility checks and suits organisations working across several countries. Many NGOs register both and point one at the other.
Can we accept donations through the website?
Yes. The simplest option is showing your M-Pesa Paybill and bank details on a donation page. For online giving by card or M-Pesa, a donation plugin can be connected to the site, and the free SSL certificate keeps the page on HTTPS. Keep a record of how donations are receipted for your reports.
What should an NGO publish for donors?
Funders usually look for your registration details, mission, board and leadership, current programmes, annual reports and audited accounts, and contact details. Stories and photos from programmes help, but the documents are what establish credibility. Keep them current, because an outdated report signals an inactive organisation.
Do you offer discounts for NGOs?
Our published prices apply to all customers. Shared hosting plans start low and can be paid yearly by M-Pesa, which keeps costs predictable for a programme budget, and shared hosting comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Are backups included?
Corporate Hosting is backed up daily. On other plans you can add CodeGuard for daily backups you can restore. An NGO's reports and programme pages are part of its record with funders, so it is worth keeping a recent backup.
Can staff get help updating the site?
Support is available 24/7 in English and Swahili for hosting, email and domain questions. Content changes are made through your website's own editor, such as WordPress, which staff can learn quickly.
