The situation

What do Schools & Universities need from a website?

Parents choosing a school search online first. They want fees, admission requirements, term dates, transport routes and a sense of what the school is like, and they compare several schools before they visit. A school whose website answers those questions clearly is the one parents call.

Education is one of the sectors most ready to invest in being online. FSD Kenya's 2024 MSME outlook found education led both the mid-sized and established business segments, at 28 and 18 per cent. The KNBS 2016 MSME survey counted about 68,000 education businesses, from nursery schools and tuition centres to private colleges.

We host school websites with a free SSL certificate on every plan, email addresses on the school's own domain for staff, and room for learning platforms such as Moodle on Corporate Hosting or a VPS. Plans can be paid yearly by M-Pesa, which fits a school's annual budget.

Common problems

What usually goes wrong?

The office phone never stops

Parents call for fee structures, uniform lists and reporting dates, and the office repeats the same answers every term.

Admissions leads go cold

Families who find the school on social media cannot see requirements or apply, so they move on to a school that makes it easy.

Staff use personal email

Teachers writing to parents from personal addresses makes communication hard to manage and hard to trust.

Questions

Schools & Universities: questions answered

Which domain should a Kenyan school use?
Schools often use .sc.ke for primary and secondary schools and .ac.ke for colleges and universities, both managed by KeNIC with eligibility documents required. A .co.ke domain works for any school without those checks. Pick one that matches the name parents already know and use it on every circular.
Can you host Moodle for our school?
Yes. A small Moodle site for a few classes can run on shared hosting with PHP's 256 MB memory limit, but a school with hundreds of active students is better on Corporate Hosting or a VPS, where the platform has more resources during assignments and exams. We can advise once we know your student numbers.
Can parents pay school fees through the website?
The website can show your bank and M-Pesa Paybill details clearly, and it can link to a fees payment system if your school uses one. Taking fee payments directly on the site needs a payment integration with reconciliation, which schools usually get from their school management software provider.
How many staff email addresses can we have?
Hosting plans include business email on your domain, and the number of mailboxes depends on the plan and storage you choose. Many schools create addresses per office, such as admissions@ and bursar@, plus one for each teacher who writes to parents.
Are backups included for the school website?
Corporate Hosting is backed up daily. On other plans you can add CodeGuard for daily backups. A school website with news, documents and a learning platform changes often, so a daily backup is worth arranging, especially before exams and admissions.
How does the school pay for hosting?
Hosting is priced in Kenyan shillings and can be paid yearly by M-Pesa, with an invoice in the school's name. Support is available 24/7 in English and Swahili.
