How to Back Up Your Website Regularly

Create and schedule reliable backups of your files and databases in cPanel so you can recover quickly from any disaster.

Backups are your safety net against hacks, bad updates, and accidental deletions. With a recent backup, recovering a broken site takes minutes instead of days. cPanel gives you several ways to capture your data.

Download a Full Backup

  1. Log in to cPanel.
  2. Open Backup under the Files section.
  3. Click Download a Full Account Backup.
  4. Choose the home directory as the destination.
  5. Wait for the archive to generate, then download it.

A full backup includes your files, databases, email, and settings.

Back Up Individual Parts

For smaller, targeted backups:

  • Download a Home Directory archive for your files only.
  • Download a MySQL Database backup for your data.
  • Use File Manager to compress and download a specific folder.

Follow the 3-2-1 Rule

| Rule | Meaning | | --- | --- | | 3 copies | Keep at least three copies of your data | | 2 media | Store on two different types of media | | 1 offsite | Keep one copy away from the server |

Never rely solely on backups stored on the same server as your live site.

Schedule and Test

  • Automate backups with a plugin or a cron job if available.
  • Store copies on your computer or cloud storage.
  • Test a restore occasionally to confirm the backup actually works.
  • Match backup frequency to how often your site changes.

A backup you have never tested is not a backup you can trust. Restore one to a staging area now and then to be sure your recovery process works when you need it.
