Protect your hosting account by setting a strong, unique cPanel password and following simple credential hygiene rules.

Your cPanel password protects your entire hosting account, including your files, databases, and email. A weak password is one of the most common ways sites get compromised, so a strong, unique password is essential.

Build a Strong Password

A good cPanel password should:

  • Be at least 12 characters long.
  • Mix uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols.
  • Avoid dictionary words, your domain name, or birthdays.
  • Be unique to cPanel and not reused anywhere else.

A password manager can generate and store a random password so you never have to remember it.

Change Your Password in cPanel

  1. Log in to cPanel.
  2. Open Password & Security under the Preferences section.
  3. Enter your old password.
  4. Enter a new strong password twice.
  5. Use the built-in Password Generator for maximum strength.
  6. Click Change your password now.

Password Strength Guide

| Length | Character Mix | Rating | | --- | --- | --- | | Under 8 | Letters only | Weak | | 8 to 11 | Letters and numbers | Fair | | 12+ | Letters, numbers, symbols | Strong |

Keep Credentials Safe

  • Never share your cPanel password over email or chat.
  • Change it immediately if you suspect a breach.
  • Use separate passwords for FTP, email, and databases.
  • Enable two-factor authentication for an extra layer.

If you have shared your password with a developer or service, change it once their work is finished. Rotating credentials regularly limits the damage if one is ever exposed.
