What Is AutoSSL and How Does It Work?

Learn how AutoSSL automatically issues and renews free SSL certificates in cPanel so your sites stay secured without manual work.

AutoSSL is a cPanel feature that automatically requests, installs, and renews free SSL certificates for your domains. It removes the need to buy or manually configure certificates for standard sites, using providers such as Let's Encrypt.

How AutoSSL Works

AutoSSL runs on a schedule and performs these tasks for you:

  1. Detects domains and subdomains on your account that lack a valid certificate.
  2. Validates that you control each domain.
  3. Requests a free certificate from the certificate authority.
  4. Installs the certificate without downtime.
  5. Renews it automatically before it expires.

Because renewal is automatic, certificates rarely lapse once a domain is set up correctly.

Check AutoSSL Status

  1. Log in to cPanel.
  2. Open SSL/TLS Status under Security.
  3. Review the certificate status next to each domain.
  4. Click Run AutoSSL to trigger an immediate check.

When AutoSSL Cannot Issue

AutoSSL needs to validate your domain, which can fail in these cases:

| Situation | Why It Fails | | --- | --- | | DNS points elsewhere | Validation request never reaches the server | | New domain | DNS still propagating | | Blocking redirect | Validation path is redirected away |

What AutoSSL Does Not Cover

AutoSSL provides domain-validated (DV) certificates only. If you need an organization-validated (OV) or extended-validation (EV) certificate for stronger identity assurance, you must purchase one separately and install it manually through Manage SSL sites.

For everyday websites, blogs, and stores, AutoSSL is enough. If a domain repeatedly fails validation, confirm its DNS records before retrying, or contact support via the /contact page.
