A new WordPress site needs only a handful of well-chosen plugins. Keeping the list short improves speed and security, since every plugin is code that must be maintained.
The Core Set
Start with these categories, picking one plugin per role:
- Security: Wordfence or Sucuri for firewall and malware scanning.
- SEO: Yoast SEO or Rank Math to manage titles, meta, and sitemaps.
- Caching: WP Super Cache or LiteSpeed Cache for faster load times.
- Backups: UpdraftPlus for scheduled off-site backups.
- Forms: WPForms or Contact Form 7 for contact and inquiry forms.
Add Only When Needed
Resist installing plugins for problems you do not yet have. Add these later if your site calls for them:
| Need | Plugin type | |---|---| | Online store | WooCommerce | | Image optimization | Smush or ShortPixel | | Spam protection | Akismet | | Page building | A block-based builder |
Keep the List Lean
- Install only plugins from the official directory or reputable developers.
- Delete, do not just deactivate, any plugin you stop using.
- Keep everything updated to patch security issues.
- Review the list every few months and remove what you no longer need.
A focused set of well-maintained plugins is far safer and faster than a long list of overlapping ones.
