The message "Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute." appears during updates. If an update is interrupted, WordPress can get stuck showing it permanently. The fix is quick.
Why It Happens
When WordPress updates core, a theme, or a plugin, it creates a hidden file named .maintenance in the root folder and shows the maintenance notice. The file is normally deleted when the update finishes. If the update stalls or the browser tab is closed, the file remains and the site stays locked.
Delete the .maintenance File
- In cPanel, open File Manager.
- Enable Show Hidden Files (dotfiles) in the settings menu.
- Go to the WordPress root folder, usually
public_html. - Find the file named
.maintenance. - Delete it.
- Reload your site; it should load normally again.
You can do the same over FTP if you prefer a file client.
Prevent It Happening Again
- Update one item at a time rather than many at once.
- Do not close the browser tab while an update is running.
- Take a backup before updating so you can recover from a worse failure.
After clearing the file, check that the update actually completed. Go to Dashboard > Updates and re-run any update that was interrupted, so you are not left on a half-updated version.
