How to Optimize Images with the cPanel Image Manager

Use the cPanel Image Manager to resize, convert, and scale images so your website loads faster and uses less disk space.

Large images are the most common cause of slow websites. cPanel includes an Image Manager that lets you resize and convert images directly on the server, with no extra software.

Opening the Image Manager

  1. Log in to cPanel
  2. In the Files section, click Images
  3. You will see three tools: Thumbnailer, Scaler, and Converter

Scaling an Image

Use the Scaler to make a single image smaller:

  1. Click Scaler
  2. Browse to the image file
  3. Enter new dimensions (keep Retain aspect ratio ticked)
  4. Optionally keep a copy of the original
  5. Click Scale Image

Converting Image Formats

The Converter changes file types, for example from BMP or PNG to the lighter JPG:

  1. Click Converter
  2. Select the folder of images
  3. Choose the target format
  4. Convert

Better Results Before Upload

The server tools are handy in a pinch, but for best quality compress images before uploading:

  • Resize photos to the actual display width (often 1200px or less)
  • Export as JPG for photos and PNG for graphics with transparency
  • Use a free tool like TinyPNG or Squoosh to shrink file size

Tip: On WordPress, an image optimisation plugin will compress new uploads automatically, saving you from doing this manually each time.

Smaller images mean faster pages, lower bandwidth use, and a better experience for visitors on Kenyan mobile networks.
