How to Set Up a WordPress Staging Site

Create a safe staging copy of WordPress to test updates and changes before pushing them to your live site.

A staging site is a private copy of your live site where you can test updates, plugins, and design changes without risking the real one. Once happy, you push the changes live.

Create the Staging Copy

The simplest path on cPanel is a subdomain plus a duplicate install.

  1. In cPanel, create a subdomain such as staging.yourdomain.co.ke.
  2. Use a plugin like WP Staging or Duplicator to clone the live site into that subdomain.
  3. Alternatively, copy the files into the subdomain folder and import a fresh database copy.

If you use a manual copy, update wp-config.php and the site URLs to the staging address.

Keep Staging Private

  • Add a noindex directive so search engines do not index the copy.
  • Restrict access with a password under Directory Privacy in cPanel.
  • Make clear with a banner or different admin color that it is the staging site.

Test, Then Push Live

  1. Apply updates, new plugins, or design changes on staging first.
  2. Click through key pages, forms, and checkout to confirm nothing breaks.
  3. When satisfied, push the changes to production using your staging plugin, or apply the same changes manually on the live site.

| Task | Do it on | |---|---| | Major core or plugin updates | Staging first | | Theme redesigns | Staging first | | Quick content edits | Live is fine |

Always take a backup of the live site before pushing staging changes, in case the merge introduces an unexpected issue.
