How to Unlock a Domain for Transfer

Unlock your domain so a transfer can proceed, where to find the lock setting, and why some new domains cannot be unlocked yet.

Most domains carry a transfer lock, also called registrar lock or clientTransferProhibited, that blocks unauthorised transfers. Before moving a domain to a new registrar, you must remove this lock.

How to Unlock

  1. Log in to your current registrar account.
  2. Open the management page for the domain.
  3. Find the setting labelled "Transfer lock", "Registrar lock", or "Domain lock".
  4. Toggle it to unlocked or off.
  5. Save the change.

Confirm the Lock Is Off

Run a WHOIS lookup and check the domain status. If it shows ok or active rather than clientTransferProhibited, the domain is unlocked and ready to transfer.

When You Cannot Unlock

  • The domain is less than 60 days old, which triggers a registry transfer lock you cannot remove.
  • The domain was transferred or had a registrant change in the last 60 days.
  • There is an unpaid invoice or a dispute on the account.

| Status in WHOIS | Meaning | |-----------------|---------| | clientTransferProhibited | Locked, transfer blocked | | ok | Unlocked, transfer allowed |

After unlocking, get your EPP or auth code and start the transfer to NairoHost. The lock and the auth code work together, so both are required. For .co.ke domains, your registrar manages the lock through KENIC, so the wording in their panel may vary. If you cannot find the option, ask their support or contact NairoHost on WhatsApp at +254 796 358081.
