A Small Business Checklist for Getting Online in Kenya

A practical checklist for Kenyan small businesses launching their first website, from choosing a domain and hosting plan to email and going live.

Taking your Kenyan business online does not have to be overwhelming. Follow this checklist in order and you will have a professional website and email set up correctly from the start.

1. Choose and Register a Domain

Pick a short, memorable name. For a local business, a .co.ke domain signals you are based in Kenya and is registered through KENIC. A .com works well if you serve customers beyond Kenya.

2. Pick the Right Hosting Plan

For a brochure or small WordPress site, a shared hosting plan is enough. Choose based on the number of websites and email accounts you need, not just price.

3. Set Up Professional Email

Use info@yourdomain.co.ke rather than a Gmail address. It builds trust and is created free in cPanel under Email Accounts.

4. Build Your Website

Install WordPress with one click via Softaculous, choose a fast theme, and add your core pages: Home, About, Services, and Contact.

5. Add an SSL Certificate

Run AutoSSL in cPanel so your site loads over HTTPS with the padlock. This protects visitors and helps your Google ranking.

6. Set Up M-Pesa or Payment Details

If you sell online, add your payment method early and test a full checkout before launch.

7. Go Live and Tell Customers

Point your domain to NairoHost nameservers, confirm the site loads, then share the link on your social media, WhatsApp Business, and Google Business Profile.

Tip: Keep your welcome email safe; it holds the credentials you will need throughout this checklist.
