Different applications need different PHP versions. A modern CMS usually runs best on a current PHP release, while some older scripts require an earlier one. cPanel lets you change the PHP version yourself.
Why the PHP Version Matters
- Newer PHP versions are faster and more secure.
- Some plugins or scripts only work on specific versions.
- Running an unsupported version can cause errors or security risks.
If your site shows a blank page or a "requires PHP version" warning, the PHP version is often the cause.
Changing the Version
- Log in to cPanel.
- Open Select PHP Version (sometimes labelled MultiPHP Manager).
- Choose the PHP version you want from the dropdown.
- Save or apply the change.
- Reload your website to confirm it works.
Enabling Extensions
On the same Select PHP Version page, you can switch to the Extensions tab to enable modules your application needs, such as curl, mbstring, or gd. Tick the required extensions and save.
Testing Before You Commit
Before switching the version on a live site:
- Note your current version so you can revert.
- Test the change during quiet hours.
- Watch for errors after reloading several pages.
If a new version breaks your site, simply switch back to the previous one using the same page. For help choosing the right version for your application, contact support through the /contact page.
