How to Create a Subdomain in cPanel

Set up a subdomain like blog.yoursite.co.ke in cPanel to organise sections of your website or run separate apps.

A subdomain is a separate section of your main domain, such as blog.yoursite.co.ke or shop.yoursite.co.ke. Subdomains are free, do not require a new domain registration, and are useful for blogs, stores, staging sites, or apps.

Creating the Subdomain

  1. Log in to cPanel.
  2. Open the Domains section and choose Create A New Domain or Subdomains.
  3. Type the subdomain prefix, for example blog, and select your main domain.
  4. cPanel automatically suggests a document root folder, often blog.yoursite.co.ke.
  5. Click Submit to create it.

Adding Content

Upload the files for the subdomain into its document root folder using File Manager or FTP. For a one-click application like WordPress, use Softaculous and select the subdomain as the install location.

How DNS Handles Subdomains

Because the subdomain belongs to a domain already on your account, no extra nameserver changes are needed. As long as your main domain points to ns1.nairohost.site and ns2.nairohost.site, the subdomain works almost immediately.

Common Uses

  • A blog separate from your main marketing site.
  • A staging or test version of your site.
  • A client portal or web application.
  • A landing page for a campaign.

Removing a Subdomain

To remove one, return to the Domains area, find the subdomain, and delete it. Note that deleting the subdomain does not always delete its files, so clear the folder in File Manager if you no longer need the content.
