An SRV (Service) record points clients to the server and port for a specific service, such as VoIP (SIP), XMPP chat, or certain Microsoft 365 features. cPanel makes adding one straightforward.
What an SRV Record Contains
Unlike an A or CNAME, an SRV record has several parts:
- Service and Protocol (e.g.
_sip._tls) - Priority (lower is preferred)
- Weight (load balancing among equal priorities)
- Port the service runs on
- Target hostname that provides the service
Adding an SRV Record
- Log in to cPanel
- Go to Domains → Zone Editor
- Click Manage next to your domain
- Click Add Record and select SRV
- Enter the values exactly as provided by your service:
- Name: e.g.
_sip._tls.yourdomain.com - Priority, Weight, Port
- Target: the service hostname
- Name: e.g.
- Save
Getting the Right Values
Always copy the exact values from your service provider's setup instructions. A single wrong port or target stops the service from connecting.
Tip: SRV records are case-sensitive in the service and protocol prefix and must keep the leading underscores, such as
_sipand_tls.
After saving, allow time for DNS propagation before testing the service.
