How to Enable and Use SSH Access on Your Hosting Account

Enable SSH (secure shell) access on your NairoHost account to manage files, run Git, and use Composer or WP-CLI from the command line.

SSH (Secure Shell) gives you secure command-line access to your hosting account. It is invaluable for developers who want to run Git, Composer, WP-CLI, or manage files quickly without FTP.

Is SSH Available on My Plan?

SSH (jailed shell) is available on most NairoHost plans. If you do not see the option in cPanel, open a ticket via the /contact page and we will enable it for your account.

Step 1: Create an SSH Key

For security, NairoHost uses key-based authentication rather than passwords.

  1. Log in to cPanel
  2. Go to Security → SSH Access
  3. Click Manage SSH Keys → Generate a New Key
  4. Set a strong passphrase and create the key
  5. Click Manage next to the new key and Authorize it

Step 2: Download Your Private Key

Download the private key and keep it safe. Never share it. On Windows, you can convert it for use with PuTTY; on Mac and Linux, save it to ~/.ssh/.

Step 3: Connect

From your terminal:

ssh -p 22 -i ~/.ssh/yourkey username@yourdomain.com

Replace the port if support gave you a custom one. Enter your key passphrase when prompted.

What You Can Do With SSH

  • Run Composer and WP-CLI commands
  • Use Git to deploy from a repository
  • Move and edit files faster than FTP
  • Tail logs and debug in real time

Security tip: Always protect your private key with a passphrase and never paste it into a website or email.
