How to Troubleshoot Common DNS Issues

A checklist for diagnosing DNS problems, from records not resolving to email and propagation failures.

DNS problems usually come from a handful of common causes. Working through them in order will resolve most issues without guesswork.

Start With the Basics

  1. Confirm the domain uses the correct nameservers (for NairoHost, ns1.nairohost.site and ns2.nairohost.site):
dig yourdomain.com NS +short
  1. Check the specific record you changed in the cPanel Zone Editor for typos.
  2. Flush your local DNS cache so you are not seeing stale data.

Common Problems and Fixes

  • Site does not load: verify the A record points to the correct IP and that a website runs at that IP.
  • www works but root does not (or vice versa): add a matching record for the missing name.
  • Email not delivered: check MX records, priorities, and the email routing mode (local versus remote).
  • Verification fails: confirm the TXT value matches the provider's string exactly, with no extra characters.
  • Change not appearing: propagation may still be in progress. Recheck after the TTL window.

Confirm With Lookups

Query each record type to compare what DNS actually returns against what you entered:

dig yourdomain.com A +short
dig yourdomain.com MX +short
dig yourdomain.com TXT +short

When to Get Help
