What Is Inode Usage and Why It Matters

Inodes count the number of files on your account, and hitting the limit can stop email and uploads even with free disk space.

An inode is a record for every single file and folder on your hosting account. Even a tiny file uses one inode, so the total number of files matters as much as their size. Many account problems come from inode limits, not disk space.

Why Inodes Matter

You can run out of inodes while still having plenty of disk space free. When you hit the inode limit:

  • You may be unable to upload new files.
  • Email delivery can stop because new messages cannot be written.
  • Backups may fail to complete.

This is why a "disk full" symptom sometimes appears even when the disk usage figure looks low.

Common Causes of High Inode Usage

  • Thousands of cached files from a CMS or page-cache plugin.
  • Old email messages and spam stored on the server.
  • Session files that are never cleaned up.
  • Duplicate backups kept in the home directory.

How to Check and Reduce Inodes

  1. Open cPanel and check File Usage in the Statistics panel.
  2. Use File Manager to find large folders, especially cache and session directories.
  3. Clear your CMS cache through its own dashboard.
  4. Delete old emails, empty Trash and Spam, and remove unused mailboxes.
  5. Remove backup archives you have already downloaded.

Preventing Future Problems

Set your CMS to limit cached files, schedule regular cleanups, and avoid storing backups on the server itself. If inode usage stays high after cleanup, you may simply need a larger plan; you can upgrade at my.nairohost.site or ask support to advise on the right tier.
